Alfred Hitchcock – Vertigo | My 3D Groom Concepts: Ornatrix/Maya | Microids & Pendulo Studios

In this video I talk about the game Alfred Hitchcock - Vertigo by Microids & Pendulo Studios, which was released on December 16, 2021 and in its creation - I also participated as an R&D Concept Groomer. For the game I did 3d Hair Concept Art. That is, my task was - to create a 3d groom concept hairstyles for Ed, Nick, Ed Young and Julia, as well as - offer a workflow that can be used for the game. That is, HairCards for the Unity engine. But since I don't work in it, I showed all the workflow in Marmoset Toolbag. My work was used as a reference for further integration into the game. This has already been done in the team by other 3D-Artists.

Alembic Hair Creation Process (Realtime) - Series 7-20 - 14 Hours

Hello everybody!

This video pack includes all WIPs that I recorded on Patreon, but due to a leak I decided to post it on the channel. There is no usual editing, voice acting and so on ... Somewhere I didn't even insert music, because I didn't waste time on it.

The essence is simple. I continue to record the process of creating a hairstyle for the Unreal engine (Groom Plugin - Alembic Hair), which I will then use as a reference for creating haircards. And since Alembic is now gaining popularity, models are being sold and so on, I decided to cover two topics at once - in one project.

When I create an asset for myself, there are three stages to it.

1. Sculpted hair shape

2. Hair for rendering - as a reference and for Unreal Alembic Hair

3. Create haircards. This includes preparing the texture and the process itself.

In fact, all episodes from 7 to 20 are a large 14-hour stream, but I decided to divide it into parts, since it is easier to process the material and upload it to Youtube. At first I tried to load 14h - but there are always some errors popping up ... and usually, what I do for more than 1h is not absorbed by the people ... they start asking stupid questions that have answers in the video and so on ...

Yes, and I look through all the material in order to write the content, the description is much easier ...

I do not recommend turning off the sound of the video completely, as I periodically comment on something, give useful advice and share various tricks.

If you need content (timecode) - I wrote it in the description of each video. I also wrote what exactly is happening in the video.

On this project - I decided to experiment and explore the new tools that have recently appeared in Ornatrix 3 for Maya. I use Arnold Renderer purely to preview what I get.

Initially, I did everything out of my head, because I wanted to try to come up with something of my own. Then I realized that there is still not enough material in my brain and I need to collect references =) In the series, you can even see that at first - I don't show refs, and then - I use different of them. Mostly they are from the 3dsk website, I found some on Pinterest, and so on ...

Again - I'm not trying to repeat something - exactly. So it is not interesting, especially when the requirement at work is to come up with something of your own based on refs.

Also, starting with this video - I began to record everything in detail. Without missing anything .. Yes, this is a laborious and long process, but otherwise you will not learn .. I have avoided this moment for a long time, since I had to release a quick video so that the channel does not growth ... But lately, I realized one thing for myself ... I want people to be able to do the same after watching my videos ...

Therefore, I also created Patreon with a private Discord chat to help people, answer their questions, and give Feedback.

It's clear that all the same, my time is limited and I can't cover everything ... But I try. I really really want to tell and show a lot, and now - I started doing it. Again, if someone doesn't understand something .. Discord chat is always open for questions ... Unfortunately, I don't have time to monitor other sites ... Be understanding.

In this video, I show the performance of this hairstyle in the Unreal Engine 4 viewport on a single 2080Ti. I tell you how many frames I rendered, show the settings of the sequencer, which CVars I used to improve the rendering, how to improve the DoF on hairs, what the hairstyle consists of, and how to optimize the FPS, how to create LoD, etc.

This is my grooming - a project for REPLIKR from New Zealand - https://www.replikr.com/ , which I did in Unreal Engine 4 using the groom plugin and Ornatrix alembic in Maya.


Render time - 13 hours at 2626 frames.


Sampling - 1 Spatial и 32 Temporal AA.

Baby - 548, Main - 74 151, Ponytail - 19 957


I'll do more when I figure out how to increase the FPS of the viewport =) For regular hair in Arnold - I use 400K hair =) for better quality and a subtle realistic look.

I created the hair in Ornatrix Maya, then exported it to Alembic and imported it using the Groom Plugin.

Shading / Texturing / Rendering - Unreal Engine 4.26.1

The character, eyelashes, eyebrows were prepared by the customer.


The term for this hairstyle is 5 days + 3 days to transfer the hairstyle to another character.

26 Nov - developers updated the new Custom Base Shape. Now it has its own icon, "create" button, and improved subdivision tool.

In the first minutes, I show you what you will see in this video, and then - as always, the process of creating terrain with procedural materials and using the new "Custom Base Shape"

It not only has a real-time path-tracer implemented for photo-real renders (as you work) but also we developed a new Erosion system which is faster than in World Creator 2 AND creates absolutely amazing and outstanding results. Besides of that, the new UI system is way more modern, 100% flexible (World Creator has an integrated UI designer with which you can completely change the look of everything). Also, tons of new Distribution Rules have been developed for Filters, Textures, and 3D Objects - you now also may add as many Distribution Rules as you wish (no limits). You even will be able to develop your own Filters and Distribution Rules directly within World Creator :open_mouth:. Of course, there is a LOT MORE stuff (like the powerful Biome system on which everything is built upon) that awaits you and we will enroll the full feature list as soon as the closed ALPHA version is available for selected customers - please be patient on that, regular updates will come day after day/week after week.

BETA version has a delay of 2 weeks and will be available soon - all customers that purchased the Professional or Enterprise version of World Creator with an active maintenance plan will have access to World Creator 3 BETA as soon as available. We will inform everyone as well.

The first official release will be December 2020 (before Christmas).

We are super-duper hyped ourselves for World Creator 3 and cannot wait to deliver it to you all

We have a few open spaces for people with larger communities and subscribers, so you can join us on Discord and then let us know about your work. Also, like good artists, you can also ask for access to this Alpha, and then the developers will decide and possibly give you access.

In this tutorial - I show the creation of twisted hairstyle, eyebrows, eyelashes, fur in Ornatrix Maya.I show the use of Maya MASH for the scattering of grass, the final settings of Arnold Render for the rendering of fur and the render on our farm.
